Short History of the Unitarian Church in Hungary |
The founder of the Unitarian Church, Francis David (1510-1579) was born in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) in Transsylvania. He studied at his birthplace, then in Brassó (Brašov, Romania) and in Wittenberg (Germany). After having been acquainted with the unitarian ideas in Europe he returned home and founded the Unitarian Church and elaborated its basic teachings.
The beginning of the Unitarian Church is tought to have been at the "Diet of Torda" (1568), where the freedom of conscience was first time declared in history. The new faith spread speedily even beyond Transsylvania, mainly in various parts of Hungary. The Hungarian unitarianism and its polish variant, the "socianianism" proceeded through to the Netherlands, to Britain and America.
