Reformed Church in Hungary |

Reformed Church of Nyírbátor (15th century)
The Calvinistic trend of the Reformation spread speedily after Lutheranism in Hungary. In 1561 the Debrecen Synod adopted the reformed confessions (the Heidelberg Catechism and the Second Helvetic Confession). That was the birth of the Reformed Church in Hungary. Its life was being organised by a church government based on the synodal-presbyterian principle in five church districts: Danubian, Transdanubian, Cistibiscan Transcibiscan and Transylvanian districts. (It is to be noted that this is the only church among the Presbyterian churches where bishops and general curators as ministerial and lay presidents are at the heads of the church districts.) The Reformed Church in Hungary is, after the Roman Catholic Church, the second largest among the historical churches in the country. The members of the Reformed Church in Hungary constitute about the 2l% of the country's population. The number of our church-buildings is 1402.
